Who rents a car in Downtown

Downtown mixes three kinds of guests. Visitors stay a few nights near the fountain and want to see the rest of the city, from the beaches of Jumeirah to the towers of Dubai Marina. Residents of the apartment towers need a car for daily life, school runs and weekends. Business travellers have meetings in Business Bay and DIFC, next door. The Boulevard is pleasant on foot, but almost everything beyond it is easier by car.

Driving and parking in Downtown Dubai

Downtown sits right on Sheikh Zayed Road, with Financial Centre Road running into the district and Al Khail Road just beyond Business Bay. Traffic around the Boulevard gets heavy on fountain evenings, weekends and big celebrations, so allow extra time. Salik toll gates on the main roads are counted during the rental and paid at the end of it.

Hotels usually offer valet or guest parking, and most residential towers have visitor spaces at the entrance. Elsewhere, look for public paid parking and check the signs, and ask your building how guests park before the car arrives.

Each rental includes around 250 km per day, plenty for a day trip from Downtown to the coast and back.

From Downtown Dubai to the airport

Dubai International Airport is on the Deira side of the Creek, closer to Downtown than to the southern districts of the city. You can also have the car waiting at Dubai Airport when you land and drive it straight to your hotel.

UAE residents: a UAE driving licence and an Emirates ID. Tourists: a passport, a visit visa and your home driving licence. Licences from the UK, the United States, Canada, most European countries and many others are accepted as they are; for other countries, add an International Driving Permit.
